Speaking with an electrolarynx

An electrolarynx device is one of three different methods for voice rehabilitation following laryngectomy. Some use it as the only method to speak, while others have an electrolarynx as a backup in those situations where speaking with a voice prosthesis is not possible.

This method involves a handheld external device that generates vibration when placed to the skin of the neck or face. The vibrating sound created by the electrolarynx is then shaped by the tongue and lips and converted into understandable speech.

It should be noted that the voice produced with the electrolarynx has a tinny, somewhat “robotic” sound, which can be modulated to some extent.
